At La Foppaccia, you’ll find a small, well-preserved church dedicated to Saint Anne. Every year, on the last Sunday of July, during the Feast of Saint Anne, you can participate in a celebration that envelops you in a unique atmosphere, bringing you back in time.

Today, La Foppaccia is a popular summer vacation spot, complete with a refuge, Chianova. However, in the past, it was an extremely valuable pastureland for the local economy of the people living in Verceia.

Getting to La Foppaccia

You can reach La Foppaccia by taking a forest track, accessible with a valid permit, which can be obtained at the local bars in Verceia. To get there, exit SS36 immediately after the first tunnel, at the first turnoff to the right for Verceia. Continue past the churchyard of San Fedele and follow the road leading to the Predello hamlet, continuing with a few hairpin bends until you reach La Foppaccia.

cascate acquafraggia

Acquafraggia Waterfalls

As Leonardo da Vinci once said, impressed by the majestic beauty while passing through Valchiavenna, “Up the said river (the Mera), there are waterfalls of 400 fathoms which offer a beautiful view…”

cascate dell'acquafraggia
cascate dell'acquafraggia ponte legno

The Acquafraggia Waterfalls, formed by the harmonious intersection of two valleys created by glaciation, are named from the Latin “aqua fracta” (broken water). They consist of a series of waterfalls formed by the constant interruption of the river’s course by rugged rocks, which, mixed with the surrounding vegetation, create a breathtaking landscape. This culminates in the final double waterfall, which flows into an expansive green carpet.

By following the panoramic path, one can reach the picturesque village of Crana, adding even more beauty and charm to the experience.

pian di spagna

Pian di spagna

The Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve and Lake Mezzola: A Protected Natural Area in Lombardy

The Pian di Spagna Oasis

The Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve and Lake Mezzola is a protected natural area in Lombardy that includes Lake Mezzola and the land between it and Lake Como, known as the Pian di Spagna. This area is a wetland that is heavily frequented by migratory wildlife and spans portions of the territories of the municipalities of Sorico and Gera Lario in the province of Como, and Verceia, Novate Mezzola, and Dubino in the province of Sondrio.

The Pian di Spagna is an alluvial plain formed by debris brought by the Adda River. Thousands of years ago, Lake Como and Lake Mezzola were once connected.

This area is of international interest, offering a rare opportunity to observe alpine aquatic environments that are becoming increasingly uncommon. The reserve consists mainly of vast reed beds. The surface of the lake, ponds, and channels is partly hidden by the growth of water lilies with their expansive floating leaves. Most of the Pian di Spagna is used for farming, particularly for maize, alfalfa, ryegrass, and hay meadows, interspersed with rows of fruit trees and scattered trees such as elms, poplars, alders, willows, and oaks.

Fauna and Wildlife

The fauna of the reserve includes a variety of birds such as mallards, coots, common shelducks, and cormorants. The area is also home to amphibians like the crestless newt, green frog, and common toad, as well as reptiles including the European pond turtle, grass snake, and lizard.

Historical and Artistic Heritage

The Pian di Spagna area is not only rich in natural beauty but also in historical and artistic significance. Key landmarks include the Fort of Fuentes and the Chiesetta di San Fedelino. Along the ancient Regina road lies the Tempietto di San Fedele, a proto-Romanesque chapel dating back to the 10th century, with contemporary frescoes. This chapel is believed to be located at the site of the martyrdom of St. Fedele and can be accessed on foot from Samolaco or by boat from Lake Mezzola.

The Fort of Fuentes

Between 1603 and 1606, Count Fuentes, the Spanish governor of Milan, ordered the construction of a fortress to defend the northern border of the Duchy from the French and the Grisons, who at the time occupied Valtellina and Valchiavenna. The building was demolished at the end of the 18th century by the Napoleonic forces, and now only the walls remain visible.

The Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve and the surrounding area offer a rich combination of natural beauty, wildlife, and historical significance, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

Another option is the Valtellina Trail, which takes you from Colico to Bormio. This is a cycling and pedestrian route that runs along the Adda River. TEMPIETTO DI SAN FEDELINO: A Hidden Treasure

Located on the shores of Lake Mezzola, where the Mera River flows into the lake, the Tempietto di San Fedelino is the oldest example of Romanesque architecture in Lombardy.

At the northernmost tip of Upper Lario, on Lake Mezzola, at the entrance to Valchiavenna, lies what can be considered the source—not only architectural but also symbolic—of the Romanesque style of the Como and Valtellina regions, which began to develop around the year 1000. This is the evocative little church of San Fedelino, one of the most precious examples of Romanesque art in Lombardy and the oldest monument in the area. Nestled against the Berlinghera Mountain, on a strip of land facing the Mera River, which flows into Lake Mezzola shortly thereafter, the temple can be reached via a path from Casenda (Samolaco) or by boat from Novate Mezzola.

The isolated nature of the location has, over the centuries, contributed to the preservation of San Fedelino, as it has never been subject to the continuous influx of people that would have transformed it into a conventional sanctuary, even though devotion to the saint has always remained strong. The church has not undergone any changes, and its original architectural structure remains intact, making it a genuine testament to the popular piety of the early millennium. History, art, and the natural surroundings make San Fedelino an unparalleled tourist destination, well worth the unusual journey.

sentiero per san fedelino

Who Was Fedelino?

Fedelino is believed to have been a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity. His story tells of his escape from Milan in 284 AD, along with some companions, to escape the persecutions of Emperor Maximian. At that time, Christianity was spreading rapidly among the populations, and Maximian demanded that the converted soldiers sacrifice to the pagan gods. When they refused, they were imprisoned. Fedelino, along with the Bishop of Milan, Materno, helped them escape to Como. Once caught, they were all killed, except for Fedelino, who arrived alone at the lake. He boarded a boat in search of safety in a place that seemed secure and inaccessible, at the foot of a mountain near Samolaco. However, his persecutors reached him there as well. Fedelino reaffirmed his refusal to renounce the Christian faith and was beheaded and buried at that spot. The local people built a small chapel to house his relics.

In 964, on the eve of the first millennium, San Fedelino appeared in a dream to a woman from nearby Gordona, who was very devout to the saint. He indicated the spot where his remains were buried.

The Bishop of Como, Uboldo, was informed, and he set off for Samolaco with a large crowd to recover the relics and transport them with hymns, songs, and miraculous events to Como, to the Church of Santa Eufemia, which was then renamed San Fedelino. On the right bank of the Mera River, above the ruins of the original early Christian chapel, a new temple was built, the same one we find today, practically intact. The diminutive name “Fedelino” comes from the fact that this chapel is indeed a very small building, especially when compared to the larger Church of San Fedele in Como.

Welcome to Hotel Saligari

We are located in Verceia, in a strategic position at the gates of Valchiavenna, just a few kilometers from Lake Como and Valtellina.

For years, we have been welcoming tourists from various backgrounds and nationalities: from young couples to families, from athletes to business travelers, as well as those passing through our region. For us, hospitality is sacred, and it is essential to meet every single need of our guests. For this reason, several improvements have been made to our facility.

Our hotel has twenty rooms, recently renovated with high-quality materials and equipped with all the comforts needed for a perfect stay. In line with our principle of offering increasingly attentive hospitality to our guests, we decided to create four rooms designed to accommodate people with disabilities.

First and foremost, an elevator has been installed, providing access to all floors of the hotel: from the restaurant on the ground floor to the reception and the rooms. These rooms are designed with wide entrances and spaces that allow easy movement, just like at home.

The bathrooms are equipped with all the necessary supports: toilets with grab bars, a compliant-height sink, and spacious, comfortable showers that include a special chair for added comfort.

We love the tourists who visit our region.

Hospitality is the most important calling card for any accommodation, and that is why we are committed to improving our quality and service.

Lake Mezzola

The Wonders of Lake Mezzola: Between Relaxation and Sports

The upper part of Lake Como is a wonderfully wild and primitive environment, still largely intact. Visiting it by canoe is a relaxing experience, yet it also holds the thrill of discovery. Through the Mera River, an inflow to Lake Como, you enter the Pian di Spagna Nature Reserve, the largest in Lombardy. Continuing along the river, you reach Lake Mezzola, which is also part of the reserve.

Here, you can witness hundreds of birds and enjoy a diverse and surprising landscape: on one shore, there are shallow waters and reed beds, while on the other (accessible only by lake), you’ll find deep waters, steep cliffs, isolated beaches, and a beautiful waterfall. There are also numerous fish species, including the lake trout, lavarello (introduced from Northern Europe), agone, pike, perch, sunfish, chub, bream, triotto, vairone, alborella, sanguinerola, carp, tench, pike-perch, bottatrice, and eel, as well as rare species like the savetta and barbi, and temoli that have descended from the Mera River.

Lake Mezzola is also an excellent location for birdwatching due to the remarkable number of aquatic and wading birds that populate its shores.

For those interested in practicing rowing as a sport or training with their team, Verceia hosts a prominent indoor rowing center. The facility offers a training tank for beginner rowers, rowing ergometers, boat rentals (skiff, mini skiff, double scull, four-oar boat, and four-oar pair), and the possibility of professional coaching.

The “Strada dei cavalli”

The name Strada dei Cavalli comes from the long lines of horses laden with goods that traversed this route until 1834. At that time, it was the only mule track, used for trade and travel around Lake Como. It was guarded by the State of Milan, with which the Grisons (present-day Switzerland) were in conflict. The state forged strong diplomatic and commercial relations with the Duchy of Venice, and the subsequent opening of the Strada Priula between Valtellina and Val Brembana, passing through the Cà San Marco pass, was a natural consequence of this.

The itinerary, recently reopened with significant works to ensure the safety of travelers, begins just before the new tunnel of the S.S.36 highway leading to Verceia, near railway crossing no. 7. The starting point is marked by a totem with a stylized image of a horse’s head. Along the path, you will also find signs with anecdotes and stories.

The road winds through the rocky cliffs of Sasso Corbé, where the view stretches over Lake Mezzola, the Pian di Spagna, and Lake Como. From here, the mule track becomes easier to walk, and soon you’ll reach the hamlet dominated by the Church of San Fedele, followed by the location of Poncià on the banks of the Ratti stream. In the past, a bridge was supposed to be built here, and beyond it, the road continued through the ancient village of Verceia, eventually leading to Chiavenna.

The total length of the hike is approximately four kilometers.

It’s a great way to immerse yourself in nature while discovering the history of our territory.

30 years of Hotel Saligari – An history of passion and hospitality

A Special Month: December and the Beginning of a 30-Year Journey

For us, December is not just any month. On December 1, 1994, Mario Saligari took over the management of HOTEL MIRALAGO – DANCING LA BUSSOLA, a large property in urgent need of renovation.

From 1 to 3: The Renovation Journey**

Originally a 1-star hotel with shared bathrooms and 20 rooms, the first renovation took place in the early 2000s, adding private bathrooms to all rooms and introducing new services, elevating the hotel to a 3-star rating.

Big Evenings and Exceptional Guests

The hotel, which already existed, was also known for its attached dancing venue. With Mario’s arrival, the established programming continued, offering lively evenings of traditional dance and hosting iconic artists from the 60s, such as the legendary Peppino di Capri, the Casadei Orchestra, Ricchi e Poveri, Equipe 84, Renato dei Profeti, and Riccardo Fogli – who praised the atmosphere, the warm hospitality, the cuisine, and the quality of the olive oil used (being from Tuscany, he knew what he was talking about!). Sandro Giacobbe and many others also graced our evenings.

Evolution and Transformation: Banquets and Major Events

Thanks to Mario’s professional training as a chef, the restaurant offering significantly improved, and the dancing hall was transformed into a large banquet hall, capable of hosting up to 300 people.

The Birth of La Trela: A Cozy Place in 2002

In 2002, La Trela was born – a unique venue where stone and rock take center stage, reminiscent of typical mountain environments used to store food cool during the summer. The goal was to create a warm, welcoming, and private space for our guests.

The Second Renovation: Innovation and Accessibility in 2019

In 2019, the property underwent a second, radical renovation: all thermal and plumbing systems were updated, an elevator was installed, beds and mattresses were replaced with Simmons beds (210 cm long), and the bathrooms were renovated to meet future 4-star requirements. The addition of the elevator and rooms designed for disabled access made the facility accessible to all.

Today: A Venue for Unforgettable Events

Today, we are one of the most renowned locations in the area, especially known for hosting events, particularly weddings.

Passion for Hospitality: The Heart of Our Work for 30 Years

Our passion for hospitality and dining has always been the cornerstone of our work, and it still sets us apart. For 30 years, attention to detail has been our way of making every experience unforgettable.

Another of our strong points is certainly the panoramic view: we strive to convey the beauty of our surroundings to our guests as well.

30 Years of Success: The Celebration with the Opening of Involt

We wanted to celebrate our 30 years of activity with the recent opening of our wine bar, Involt.

In these 30 years, we’ve gone through many changes, faced challenges, but also achieved numerous successes. Your smiles have always been our greatest source of satisfaction. We thank you for your continued support over the years and for believing in us and our establishment.

berlinghera

Info – Berlinghera

Everything You Need to Know

MONTE BERLINGHERA

Monte Berlinghera (1,930 m above sea level) is a peak in the Lepontine Alps on the western shore of Lake Como and Lake Mezzola. Its summit marks the boundary between the province of Como (southern slope, in the municipality of Sorico) and the province of Sondrio (northern slope, in the municipality of Samolaco). The steep slopes are bordered to the north, east, and south by the Mera river and Lake Mezzola, and at the confluence of the river and the lake, you can find the Romanesque chapel of San Fedelino, as well as the hamlets of Albonico, Bugiallo, and Dascio.

HIKE DESCRIPTION

The described route is a loop: it ascends to the summit of Berlinghera from the east and descends from the west-northwest ridge (the normal route). The difficulties are T/E, except for the last part of the climb, from Alpe Derschen to the summit, which is rated EE due to the steep terrain and some easy rock sections.

Access by road:
The route begins at the chapel of San Bartolomeo, beautifully overlooking Lake Como. You can reach it from Gera Lario (near the northernmost point of the western shore of Lake Como). From the main road, take the turnoff for Montemezzo and Bugiallo. After about 3 km, turn right for Bugiallo, and from there (following signs), you ascend to San Bartolomeo (11.5 km from Gera Lario).

From San Bartolomeo (1,204 m), follow the path that starts to the right of the fountain (signposts for the Alta via del Lario, Sasso Canale, etc.) and ascend through a forest of Scots pines until you reach the dirt road that also begins from San Bartolomeo, coming here after a loop to the east. Go left along the dirt road. After a short stretch, you’ll encounter a fork: leave the route with white-red trail markers to the left and continue to the right along the more evident dirt road. Higher up, after a left-hand bend, you’ll find a noticeable fork. Take the right path, which, almost level, leads to the long and wide clearing of Alpe Godone (1,425 m), where the two dilapidated huts of the alpine pasture are located. Behind these buildings, ascend to the reinforced concrete structure of the aqueduct. To its left, you will find the path that climbs north. After a steeper ramp, the trail crosses a small valley with rocks (with a lovely view of the underlying Lake Novate Mezzola). The valley is easily crossed, following the path created during the work to lay water pipes (there was previously a narrower trail, likely a required passage, at least according to the CAI/TCI guide).

Ascend to the houses of Alpe Derschen (1,530 m), now outside the forest, from which you can enjoy a beautiful panorama. To the north of the alpine pasture, reach a grassy saddle (1,545 m) where you can see (above and to the north-northwest) Alpe di Pero, which you need to reach. From the saddle, cross steep slopes (some rocks and a few slightly unstable stretches) until you reach a solitary larch. Beyond this, continue ascending on steep terrain until you reach the ruins of Alpe di Pero, located in a magnificent panoramic spot (1,715 m – 1.5 hours from San Bartolomeo). The summit of Monte Berlinghera is exactly to the west of the alpine pasture. From here, ascend left towards a sparse larch forest; cross it and continue ascending (following traces) gaining some altitude to reach a col with a larch, which opens into a rocky rib to your left. Traverse left (the trail is quite clear) to reach the col, beyond which, after a short descent, continue traversing south (steep terrain and some rocks) until you reach another ridge. Now ascend right (following traces) to reach the southeast ridge of Monte Berlinghera, along which you’ll reach the panoramic summit (1,930 m – 1 hour from Alpe di Pero).

DESCENT

Follow the west-northwest ridge. After reaching an iron cross, descend along the northern side of the ridge, between the larches (trail), then return to the wider ridge, and reach Bocchetta Chiaro (1,666 m). Descend south to reach the meadows of the beautiful basin (about 1,500 m), where you’ll find the restored houses of Alpe Pescedo (on the left) and Alpe di Mezzo (on the right). Follow the dirt road down, passing the fork where you abandoned it on the way up, and continue down to San Bartolomeo (1.5 hours to 1.75 hours from the summit).

CURIOSITIES

At the end of the Second World War, the slopes of Monte Berlinghera, rich in natural hideouts and dense forests, were guarded by the 52nd Garibaldi Brigade “Luigi Clerici,” the same group that arrested Benito Mussolini on April 28, 1945, led by partisan Pier Luigi Bellini delle Stelle. The alpine pasture of Monte Berlinghera was also the scene of a large British air supply on the night of April 5, 1945. Military supplies were parachuted to the local partisans, including 20 heavy machine guns, 300 Sten submachine guns, mortars, and ammunition. In 1969, a votive chapel was built at the summit by the Sorico Alpine Group. Inside, several plaques were displayed from Italian and foreign Alpine groups in memory of fallen soldiers from all wars. Unfortunately, the structure had a short life as it was struck by lightning a few years later. Today, only the perimeter walls remain, and further down, you can still recognize part of the curious roof shaped like a soldier’s hat.

Discovering the Strada dei Cavalli: An Excursion Through Nature and Tradition

A Unique Experience Between Mountain and History

If you’re staying at the Hotel Saligari, the perfect starting point to explore the Valchiavenna, you can’t miss the hike along the Strada dei Cavalli to the Crotti di Sceglio and the Pradel area. This route, lasting about 2 hours and 30 minutes, is suitable for families and animal lovers and will lead you through spectacular landscapes and historical remnants of a living mountain culture.

The Route: From Hotel Saligari to the Strada dei Cavalli

Starting from the Hotel Saligari, the journey begins with a gentle climb, followed by a right turn towards the Sentiero Storico dei Cavalli. After a brief descent of about 50 meters, the Strada dei Cavalli, clearly marked and with an easy surface, is accessed on the left. The trail runs at altitude, offering breathtaking views of the village of Verceia and Lake Mezzola.

Choosing the Path: Fontanin and Piena

After a bit of walking, you’ll reach the Fontanin spring, enclosed by stone walls and secured with a padlock. Here, you’ll encounter a fork in the trail: you can choose to ascend to the left along a steeper and more challenging path (not suitable for children) or continue straight to Piena, a stunning viewpoint offering panoramic views of Mount Berlinghera and the entire valley below.

At Piena, you can climb 62 steps to Ghiandone or continue on the trail until you reach the paved road that leads to Foppaccia.

Exploring Sceglio and its Crotti

Along the paved road, the view on the left reveals a spectacle of unspoiled nature. After about 500 meters, you’ll arrive at the small village of Sceglio, known for its mountain huts, sheep farms, and the well-maintained plots of land cultivated by local farmers.

Beyond the village, the path enters a shaded area dominated by ancient chestnut trees. Here, you’ll find the Crotti di Sceglio, ancient stone buildings leaning against each other. These crotti preserve Sorel, a crack in the rock from which air flows at a constant temperature (between 8 and 14 degrees), ideal for storing food and wine.

A brief pause at the fountain will allow you to refresh before continuing the ascent through four hairpin bends immersed in the tranquility of nature.

Arrival at Pradel: A Postcard-Perfect View

After about an hour of walking, you’ll reach the Pradel area, a charming plateau with monumental chestnut trees, a fresh little fountain, and ruined stone huts. The view that opens before your eyes is breathtaking: below you, the village of Sceglio, Verceia, Lake Mezzola, and Mount Berlinghera. In the background, you’ll see the Valchiavenna, the picturesque village of Dascio, swans, fishermen’s boats, and in the distance, Lake Como stretching towards Dongo.

Here, you can enjoy a well-deserved moment of relaxation before deciding whether to descend again towards Verceia or continue towards Foppaccia.

A Hike for Everyone

This walk is also perfect for families and those traveling with their dogs: there are sections where your four-legged friends can roam freely. Along the way, you’ll also find wooden sculptures, a detail that makes the experience even more enchanting.

Our dog Black loves this hike and the sense of freedom it offers in the safer stretches. It’s a unique opportunity to experience the mountain in complete harmony with nature!

Hotel Saligari relaunches: after the mourning, collaborators join the company.

For Mario Saligari, 61 years old, from Grosotto, a chef and manager of the Hotel Saligari in Verceia for thirty years, facing the trauma of losing a life and work partner like Enrica, known to all as Chicca Pedeferri, who passed away on September 6th last year, is no easy task. However, with the support of his collaborators, he is managing to overcome this challenge. And we’re not just talking about moral support, because after Chicca’s passing, the Hotel Saligari family has expanded. The management is now under a new company, which not only includes Saligari but also several of his former employees.

hotel saligari versa il vino

“I decided to involve the team, my closest collaborators, to ensure the continuity of the business,” says Saligari, “and I’m glad I did. It’s a difficult time, where finding reliable collaborators is very challenging, so we must absolutely hold on to those we have, who have shown dedication and commitment to their work. Now, in the company, there are three of my former employees and Chicca’s niece. Cory Ghedin, who has been with us for years and who was like a daughter to Chicca, takes care of the reception and all administration. Then there is Luca Galli, my dining room collaborator, Nicholas D’Alessandro, responsible for setting up banquets and the dining room, and Allyson Pedeferri, the young niece of my life and work partner. This is the new beating heart of Hotel Saligari, which I’ve managed for 30 years and ran for 25 alongside Chicca. We want to move forward, continuing in the path we’ve traced, with a structure that is always more modern, renovated, and comfortable, with 40 beds in 20 rooms completely renovated in 2019. It was a significant investment, partly diminished by Covid, but we are recovering.”

The hotel has a loyal clientele, overlooks Lake Mezzola, and operates at full capacity from Easter to the end of October. The main challenge, however, is the shortage of collaborators, a problem Mario Saligari is trying to solve in every way, even by bringing former employees into the company. “Working together, sharing, collaborating is fundamental in every sector and brings results,” Saligari observes. “It was also the case for the ‘Adopt a Vineyard’ project, which I supported along with my colleagues Giuseppe Bonseri from Sunny Valley in Valfurva and Marco Rocca from Mottolino Spa in Livigno, on the proposal of Aldo Rainoldi, owner of the eponymous winery in Chiuro, and Giacomo Mojoli. In 2007, to prevent some vineyards in the Valgella area from being abandoned due to the inability to harvest and process the grapes, they launched ‘Adopt a Vineyard,’ asking us hoteliers to buy wine produced by the small but highly skilled growers of these plots in Valgella. We did it, and we’re proud of it.”

Saligari has been purchasing the excellent “Valtellina Superiore” wine from Alessio Magi for years, and thanks to this partnership, he was awarded the “Follia Creativa 2024” prize, organized by “5 Hats” in collaboration with “Italia a Tavola”. “Last October, journalists and talent scouts came to dine and stay with us during a tour organized by the Morbegno mountain association,” Saligari says. “By chance, they discovered the ‘Adopt a Vineyard’ project. They loved it so much that they decided to give us this prestigious recognition, the result of passion, commitment, and love for our Valtellina. We immediately said ‘yes’ with conviction because it allowed us to support local viticulture, enhancing the work of highly skilled winemakers who absolutely deserved to continue cultivating their lands.”

In short, unity is strength, both in the vineyard and at the hotel.

Frasnedo

Discovering Frasnedo
Frasnedo is a village in the municipality of Verceia, located in the Valle dei Ratti at an altitude of 1,287 meters.
The village can be reached directly from Verceia by leaving your car at the Sentiero del Tracciolino (end of the Vico-Motta pastoral road). Here, it is necessary to obtain a car permit (€5.00) to travel on the road that leads to Valle dei Ratti (it can be requested at our hotel), or you can continue on foot.

From here, the walk takes about one to two hours, with many alternative routes available along the way.

In this wonderful location, you’ll find the Rifugio Frasnedo.

Opened in 2010, the Rifugio is a new and welcoming facility equipped with all the comforts needed for a relaxing stay: bar service, a restaurant with a large dining room, wifi, comfortable rooms, and a beautiful outdoor veranda where you can enjoy the stunning view.

The facility is family-run, offering a pleasant environment where the hosts will make you feel at home!

Traditional local dishes are offered, with maximum availability and friendliness, in a natural and scenic area of considerable beauty.

The Rifugio is open year-round.
